Audi's A4 e-tron slips to 2029 on a platform three years late

Handelsblatt puts the first electric A4 no earlier than March 2029, nine months behind the date Audi's own CEO gave last October. The cause is Volkswagen's SSP platform, cut from eight variants to four and rewired for 48 volts.

The A4 badge left showrooms in 2024 and will not return before 2029

Audi's first electric A4 will not enter production before March 2029, Handelsblatt reports, and insiders it spoke to expect late April or early May. That is nine months later than the mid-2028 date Gernot Döllner gave in October 2025, and it stretches the gap since the combustion A4 ended in 2024 to almost five years. The problem is not the car, which stays a saloon and an Avant drawn from the Concept C. The problem is the platform under it.

Audi's A4 e-tron slips to 2029 on a platform three years late

SSP was announced in July 2021 for 2026, and has yet to build a car

The Scalable Systems Platform was Herbert Diess's answer to Tesla: one electric architecture for every Volkswagen Group brand, replacing both the MEB under the Q4 e-tron and the 800-volt PPE under the A6 and Q6 e-tron. The first car, Volkswagen's Trinity, was due in 2026. Trinity slid to 2028, then past 2030, and VW's own investor documents still said "2026+" in 2024. Against a spring 2029 start, SSP now lands roughly three years late, and Volkswagen has cut it from eight planned variants to four, with a far higher share of shared parts, to make the programme manageable at all.

Döllner's 48-volt decision reached every supplier on the Rivian architecture

The technical cause is a change of voltage after the design was under way. Döllner pushed for SSP to run its on-board network at 48 volts instead of the 12 volts Volkswagen has always used, which allows more powerful computers and thinner, lighter wiring. Most European suppliers only had 12-volt parts on the shelf, so components had to be redesigned, and the zonal electronic architecture Volkswagen is buying through its $5.8 billion joint venture with Rivian had to be reworked for the higher voltage by a team nine time zones away in California. Tesla ran the Cybertruck at 48 volts from 2023. Deciding it late is what turned the right answer into a year.

Mercedes sells an electric C-Class today, BMW's i3 arrives this autumn

The car Audi is delaying is the one its two rivals have already built. Mercedes has the electric C 300 on sale across Europe, and BMW has been building the Neue Klasse i3 in Munich since August for autumn deliveries. Audi's answer for roughly three years is the bigger A6 e-tron, or the combustion A5, which replaced the A4 in 2024 and now has to hold the segment until 2029. Chief technical officer Rouven Mohr was still confirming 2028 for the A4 e-tron as recently as this summer.

The electric Golf and T-Roc slip too, so the ID. Polo becomes the bridge

Audi is not the only brand waiting. Handelsblatt's sources put the electric Golf and the ID.4 successor at 2029 rather than 2026, and an electric T-Roc no earlier than 2030, while Volkswagen now describes SSP models built on Rivian technology as arriving "from the end of the decade". In the meantime the updated MEB under the ID. Polo, which already has a ten-month order queue, carries the volume brand, and Audi's MEB and PPE cars stop being a bridge to SSP and become the plan for the rest of the decade.

€14.6 billion of cuts, and a group CTO post that Döllner may want

The delay lands in the middle of Volkswagen's savings round. The volume brands have to take €14.6 billion out of development, and the premium group around Audi a further €11 billion in the next planning cycle, on top of the €16 billion restructuring bill the group booked this month. Handelsblatt also reports a fight over a new group-wide chief technology officer, with Döllner among the names discussed for a role that would pull development authority back to the centre. Audi's official line is that these are the usual shifts of a development phase.

AutoNext Take

SSP is not late by a development phase. It is late by a product generation. By the time the first A4 e-tron leaves Ingolstadt, the electric C-Class will be due a facelift and the i3 will be three model years old, and both will have had two rounds of software updates on architectures that actually shipped. Döllner's 48-volt call is sound engineering; Tesla settled that argument on the Cybertruck three years ago. Taking it after the Rivian architecture had been written is why the correct answer cost a year, and the four surviving SSP variants now have to earn back everything the eight were promised to deliver.

March 2029 is only the headline date. The one that matters is when the 48-volt supplier contracts now being awarded are signed, because every month they slip past the end of 2026 moves the car with them. If Handelsblatt's insiders are right about May, the A4 e-tron arrives in the same year the combustion A5 is due its own mid-life update, and Audi will have spent five full years without the badge that built the modern brand. The Q4 e-tron, on a platform Volkswagen declared a stopgap in 2021, will have outlived its own replacement date by four years.

Audi has no combustion end date, and Döllner explains it by segment

Audi has abandoned any fixed date for ending combustion engines, and chief executive Gernot Döllner says the reason is a gradient in the price list: the more expensive the car, the more buyers still choose an engine. Audi's own recent history says the same. It closed the factory that built the Q8 e-tron in February 2025, and the model leading its launch plan now is the cheapest EV it sells.

Audi's most efficient A2 e-tron is not the one with 646 km

Audi has revealed the production A2 e-tron with three battery sizes, four power outputs from 170 to 326 hp and rear-wheel drive throughout. The 646 km WLTP headline comes from the 231 hp car with an 84 kWh NMC pack, while the record 12.8 kWh per 100 km belongs to the 190 hp version on a 61 kWh LFP battery, rated at 515 km. Deliveries start in December 2026.
